AM Swim
Time: 20 minutes
It felt great to get back into my Saturday morning long run routine. For a while now (since January 2007, can't believe it will be three years this January!) I have been doing my Saturday morning long runs in Wilmore with a group of friends. The group has changed over time, depending on people's running and racing goals, but I love getting my long runs in with friends. Through the spring and summer, I've been doing my long runs with my friends Chris and Kelly. Chris just finished her first marathon in October in Detroit, and Kelly is training for the Disney Marathon in January. We've taken a few weeks off from meeting, as Chris was recovering and Kelly and I had other Saturday morning obligations, but we met up yesterday morning to get in 6 miles. I love running with these girls because they push my pace, and the time goes by so quickly as we talk pretty much the whole time.
After finishing the run, I decided to head over to the Luce Center to get in a cool down swim. My plan for training through the winter is to get in at least one swim per week on Thursdays, and add an extra swim on Saturday any time I can. I got to the pool right as a little kid's swim team practice was ending, so 4 lanes opened up for community users. The other lanes were still being used by a high school swim team, so it really made me focus on my form! I didn't want to look like a total idiot in front of those kids!
Also, I was swimming in my lane when all of a sudden someone else was swimming in my lane with me. I didn't mind at all, but it was my first time to "share a lane." It was actually helpful, because I concentrated on my form even more. I didn't want to accidentally hit or kick the girl. Luckily, the lane next to us opened up pretty soon so I just went into that lane. I continued my workout from Thursday of doing a 100 yard sets, with 50 yard breaststroke in between. I want to get to where I swim for at least 30 minutes every time I'm in the pool. Right now I am in for 20-25 minutes, mainly because I get bored. I am going to look at a few websites to get some swim workouts, and plan on doing a 5 minute warm-up, at least a 20 minute workout, then a 5 minute cool down. I am really enjoying being back in the pool!

Pazzos vs Panera
Training Log
Distance: 2.3 miles
Time: 20:35
Average Pace: 8:54
Food Log
Post-Run: string cheese
Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ banana, peanut butter and almonds, coffee
Snack: Dark chocolate cherry Kashi bar
Lunch: "mexi bowl" from leftovers
Dinner: 1/2 Frontega chicken panini, cup of chicken noodle soup, small baguette from Panera
Dessert: 3/4 of a Panera chocolate chip cookie
I had to cut my run short this morning by 1 mile, because I overslept. In the past, I would have just cut the run out of the morning entirely, but I wanted to get in as many miles as I could. I had time for two, so I hit the streets and got two miles done. Better than nothing!
Chad and I planned to go to Pazzo's for dinner tonight - a pizza place in downtown Lexington. I got home from work and after taking two hours to walk Emma, do stuff around the house, and drive to Pazzo's I was really really starving. We finally got there, and they said there would be a 20 minute wait. I told Chad there was no way I could wait 20 minutes. What I should have done in retrospect was just go get a bag of chips from the sandwich place next door to pick my blood sugar back up some. But, I was like no - we cannot wait 20 minutes, I need to eat now! So we got back in the car and started heading back towards Smashing Tomatoes, but we saw a Panera first so we pulled in there.
Now I love Panera, but Chad isn't really a big fan. He says that he can never get full there, as the food is made for women. (ha!) So, he was very sweet to eat there for me. AND they got his order wrong and brought him a turkey sandwich on white bread instead of a roast beef sandwich on asiago. I'm not sure how that got mixed up, but he ate it and actually liked it. I had the Frontega (think that is the name?) chicken panini and it was really good. Here are the ingredients:

Back in the pool
Training Log
AM
Time: 25 minute swim
Food Log
Breakfast: Banana, mini Clif peanut butter bar, 8oz coffee
Snack: none
Lunch: 6in turkey on wheat, with American cheese, tomatoes, pickles & black olives
Snack: none
Dinner: "Mexi bowl"
Dessert: 2 Reese's dark chocolate peanut butter cups
Today was my first time back to the pool in about a month. I didn't have a specific workout planned - my goal was to simply get back in the water and try to swim for 25 minutes without drowning! Surprisingly, it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I can really tell that my lung capacity has diminished some, but I am hoping that by swimming one to two times per week in the off-season, I will be back up to speed come triathlon training season.
After warming up for about 10 minutes by alternating freestyle and breast stroke, I did 4 sets of 100 yards, with 50 yards of breast stroke in between each set. Next Thursday, I will swim for 30 minutes, with the goal of doing 10x100 (with 20 second rest between each set) in between 15 to 20 minutes. I am also going to try to get a short cool-down swim in after my long run this Saturday.
I've noticed that vegetables are pretty lacking in my diet. I wanted to fix it with my dinner tonight, so I made a "mexi bowl." This dish is inspired by my sister Megan, and it is a great and fast meal.
I put a handful of tortilla chips in the bottom of a bowl, and covered it with a few spoonfuls of a warm black bean, kidney bean, corn, green bell pepper, red bell pepper and green chile mix. I topped this with some mexican blend cheese, a teaspoon of sour cream and a diced fresh roma tomato. It is cheap, fast, very easy and SO good. Plus, I like that I got a good mix of vegetables, fats and protein in one dish!

Training Log
AM Run
Distance: 5.22 miles
Time: 47:57
Average pace: 9:09
It was 35 degrees for this run, and at first I thought I was under dressed in shorts, a t-shirt, and a light New Balance jacket, but it turned out to be perfect after I warmed up a bit.
Food Log
Breakfast: Whole wheat bagel w/ peanut butter on one side, thin layer of cream cheese on the other, coffee
Snack: None
Lunch: Homeade nachos - about 10 chips sprinkled with "mexi-blend" cheese and salsa
Snack: One string cheese
Dinner: Hamburger*, one order of fries, 2 glasses of unsweet iced tea
*This is where the wheels fell off. Chad and I decided to go to Red Robin last night for dinner. I had every intention of getting a chicken burger, until I saw this:
Yes, that is a hamburger with mozzarella sticks on it - aka "The Wiseguy". I am weird and normally put fries onto my hamburger, or chips onto my sandwiches, so this cheese stick burger looked amazing! I had talked myself out of it, but then Chad talked me back into it. I knew I would never get it again, so what the heck. I did ask for it without the pepperoni slices and the banana peppers. It was everything I thought it would be and more - so good!
After Red Robin, Chad and I went to a book store to look around, and then came home. By the time we arrived home I had the worst stomachache...darn you, Wiseguy!! But, I wasn't very surprised that it made my stomach hurt. I pretty much went to bed as soon as we got home (8:45!) and I feel much better this morning...which is good, because I am about to head to the pool. No one wants to deal with stomach issues while swimming!

Training Day #2
Training Log
AM Run
Distance: 3.24 miles
Time: 28:55
Pace: 8:55:49
PM Cycling (on trainer)
Time: 20:00
Food Log
Breakfast: 1 package instant oatmeal, banana, 1 tsp. peanut butter, 12 oz. chocolate milk
Snack: string cheese
Lunch: chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, English peas, small serving of banana pudding
Snack: peanut butter mini Clif Bar
Dinner: Grilled chicken burrito from Taco Bell, handful of chips and salsa, milk
I really had to practice restraint today at lunch. The cafeteria where I work is actually pretty good, but I don't eat there very often. Today I had lunch with Chad at the cafeteria, and they had chicken fried steak that was so good it would make you want to slap your mama. My gosh it was good. I could have easily eaten one more piece of the chicken, but I convinced myself that I was satisfied with one. I had some mashed potatoes and English peas on the side, and it was a pretty good meal.
For dinner, I went by Taco Bell and picked up a grilled chicken burrito and a fresco bean burrito. I had to practice restraint here too, as it is so easy for me to succumb to the siren song of nachos supreme and double decker tacos. But, I wanted something a little more nutritious so I opted for the chicken burrito and fresco bean burrito. I ate the grilled chicken burrito and some chips and salsa, and then I was so full that I could only eat a few bites of the bean burrito. Hopefully it will fuel me for tomorrow's 5 mile run!

Winter Training Plan
I started my spring 2010 marathon training plan this morning. Day 1 was pretty easy, as it is a scheduled rest day. This year, I am going try for a 5 day per week running plan, with swimming and cycling thrown in for good measure. Here is the training plan I will follow:
*The two blank weeks are when we will be home for Christmas. I plan to run 20-25 mile weeks during this time, but I know that it is hard for me to follow a regimented schedule while traveling, so I just built "open weeks" into the plan.
My goal is to run the Derby Festival Marathon in late April. This year I've really started to get the marathon itch back. I hope to do some triathlons next summer, so I like the idea of running the marathon early in the season, then switching my training focus to triathlons.
I also hope to be a little more disciplined with my diet this training season. I've built in a 2-month base building period into my training, with my actual marathon training beginning on January 4th. This will take me right through the holiday season and all of the holiday parties that are sure to include cookies, cakes, candy, dips, chips...pretty much all the good stuff! I've never followed any type of diet, and I don't feel like I need to diet, but I do want to practice healthier eating habits.
I know that eating better and cleaner can only help me train better and feel better. In an effort to be more disciplined with my training and eating, I am going to make a sincere effort to post daily training info and a food log here each day. I'm hoping that this will help to keep me accountable! Plus, I have been reading a few running blogs where people track their daily runs and their daily food intake, and it is actually really interesting.
One more exciting thing on the training front - I got a bike trainer yesterday! I am hoping to log quite a few miles on it this winter, so I will be in decent cycling shape when the spring rolls (no pun intended) around. Plus, I think it will help with my marathon training as well.
Without further ado, here is today's stats:
Marathon Training Day 1- Rest Day (doesn't get much easier!)
Food Log-
Breakfast: 8oz dark roast coffee, banana, 1 small pumpkin muffin
Snack: Dark chocolate cherry Kashi bar
Lunch: 6in WW turkey sub w/ American cheese & veggies, 10oz Sunkist
Snack: Honeycrisp apple
Dinner: Baked potato soup, 6 saltine crackers
Dessert: 12oz hot chocolate, small slice of pumpkin pie

Emma the Firefighter: Howl-a-ween 2009
I went to Petsmart yesterday around noon, hoping to find a last minute Halloween costume for Emma. I was really hoping to find an alligator or dragon costume, but they were all out. I did find this great firefighter outfit for $3 though! Emma didn't really like wearing it at all, but it was fun to get a short video of her in it!
